The use of colored pencils can add a new dimension to an acrylic painting making it a mixed media work.
The primary types of pencils used to sketch on canvas are graphite pencils pigment based colored art pencils pastel pencils and watercolor pencils. The primary types of materials used to draw on canvas are graphite pencils pigment based colored art pencils watercolor pencils soft and oil pastels and charcoal. I would also tone the linen to a neutral color and use the neutral color as a sort of mother color. Graphite pencils can be used to draw on canvas but must be sealed with a fixative before they are permanent.
Other brands of printmaking papers are bfk rives arches and somerset. Apply golden pastel ground to canvas to create a toothy surface that can readily accept colored pencils. Regular colored pencils contain wax which will resist the paint and may cause adhesion problems. The same rule goes for graphite pencils.
Have in mind when you use fixative colors could run so approach to this step carefully. If you don t use fixative your drawing will not last. Because golden pastel ground is meant for use with pastels you might want to apply a thin light coat so that the surface isn t too toothy or gritty which will eat through your colored pencils quickly. If you want to draw on canvas this will allow you to do that.

The drawing below was created with a mix of water soluble and traditional colored pencils on a fawn colored sheet of stonehenge paper. It can take a lot of layers if you apply color with medium heavy pressure or lighter. Of course you can but i d say you probably shouldn t if you want a clear concise image. If you are looking for clearer papers bristol board is amazing.
Bill creevy a well known new york artist has a suggestion for starting a painting on canvas using water soluble colored pencils. If you use also brushes it s not a pure color pencils painting. They re available in a variety of colors and they re completely erasable on a primed canvas. If i were to use canvas i would apply an oil ground of flake white and push this ground into the weave with a pallette knife and create a smooth almost toothless surface.
You and few others have had a good intuition about color pencils but it s too easy use them on canvas and be helped by wet brushes to blend colors. In your situation i d suggest getting some.
