Can You Use Ketchup Instead Of Tomato Paste

If your recipe calls for a full 6 ounce can of standard tomato paste you can use 3 ounces double concentrated tomato paste instead.
However in a pinch equal parts ketchup work as a tomato paste substitute. Because ketchup is thinner and has more water than tomato paste you might need to reduce your dish on the stove for longer than usual to get it to the right thickness. This is my least favorite of the substitutions but it works in a pinch. Since you will be adding other flavoring ingredients to the recipe and presumably cooking it your ketchup substitute does not really need to be pre cooked.
Some of the things include the ketchup and the tomato sauce. Ketchup is a sweet condiment that doesn t have the tomato concentration. All you have to do is to mix the ketchup and tomato sauce and that s it you now have a tomato paste. Swap in 1 tablespoon of ketchup for every tablespoon of tomato paste the recipe calls for.
Since ketchup contains sugar this tomato paste substitute will sweeten up whatever you are cooking. Tomato paste is a concentration of the tomato so you use it when you want to intensify the tomato taste in a recipe. Use one large tomato for every tablespoon of tomato paste. And in most dishes you can safely use ketchup instead of the tomato paste to prepare your dish.

Ketchup can be used as a substitute on a 1 1 basis but do try to use a regular one. Use ketchup in dishes with an already sweet element like brown sugar so it won t be noticed. Actually this is the easiest substitute for tomato paste. This substitute however does assume you have either tomato paste or tomato sauce on hand you should always have one or the other consider them staples.
If you only need to add a small quantity of tomato paste. If you don t have the ketchup or the tomato sauce you can use the chopped or stewed tomatoes. There are other things that you can be used as substitute for the paste. Use this swap when you want a burst of tomato flavor like corn okra creole or smoky quinoa with mushrooms.
How much to use. Their consistency is too thin but they can be used to substitute the tomato paste.
