Why Do I Get A Runny Nose When I Eat
Camila Farah
I m in my 70s and my nose runs constantly as soon as i start eating a meal be it breakfast lunch or dinner.
It s triggered by temperature of food for some people. May be so little that it isn t noticable. It can be due to serious underlying medical conditions like hay fever food allergy etc. Some people have a chronically runny nose for no apparent reason a condition called nonallergic rhinitis or vasomotor rhinitis.
Infections such as the common cold and influenza allergies and various irritants may all cause a runny nose. If a person s nose runs without their having a food allergy this is called gustatory. Gustatory rhinitis is a form of nonallergic rhinitis that causes a runny nose when you eat certain foods. I should mention that i am married to a nurse practitioner in family practice.
Spicy foods usually trigger gustatory rhinitis. Gustatory rhinitis is suspected when you experience thin nasal discharge the sniffles almost immediately after eating the trigger food and in some cases sneezing and watery eyes but no itching or other symptoms. The temperature of the food you eat may also cause a running nose. The warmth and steam from the soup loosens up any sinus or nasal congestion that you have.
