Other causes of pulsing in the ear include earwax buildup or temporomandibular joint dysfunction disorder. If you can hear heartbeat in your ear often you must be experiencing what is called pulsatile tinnitus or a rhythmic pulsation that is in coordination with your normal heartbeat. It may also be intensified by any heightened catecholamine release for. If your blood pressure is normal it most likely is not a cause of concern.
Why do i have this noise in my ears. It is a type of rhythmic thumping pulsing throbbing or whooshing only you can hear that is often in time with the heartbeat. Usually only if it is quiet like when i m reading or at bed time. I m 56 i ve been able to hear my heartbeat in my ears off and on all my life.
This condition is also called avascular tinnitus which may be related to blood flow disturbances. There can be different possible causes for pulsatile tinnitus. The sound is the result of turbulent flow in blood vessels in the neck or head. Conductive hearing loss makes it easier to hear blood flowing through two large blood vessels that travel through each ear.

Most people with pulsatile tinnitus hear the sound in one ear though some hear it in both. The involved vessels include the large arteries and veins in the neck and base of the skull and smaller ones in the ear itself. Pulsatile tinnitus is often related to the blood flow in the vessels arteries and veins near the ears or an increased awareness of the blood flow around the ears. It is very common to sense your heart beat while lying in bed rarely is it anything serious but certainly this sensation will be aggravated if your blood pressure is high.
Although we hear tinnitus in our ears its source is really in the networks of brain cells what scientists call neural circuits that make sense of the sounds our ears hear. Most of the time pulsatile tinnitus is nothing to worry about. This is particularly common in young women who are overweight. It basically means that the cerebrospinal fluid in your brain has a higher pressure than normal.
Pulsatile tinnitus is due to a change in blood flow in the vessels near the ear or to a change in awareness of that blood flow.
