Why do your eyes tear up when you yawn. First it squeezes the lacrimal duct causing more tears to flow into the eye. When we yawn our facial muscles contract which puts pressure on these lacrimal glands. As a result there are more tears in the eye and nowhere for them to go.
Your body is yawning to take in more air. When the facial muscles tighten during a yawn the lacrimal glands may get squeezed causing release of small amount of tears. You re right a lot of people get tears when they yawn. Maybe you can feel the stretch in your jaw cheeks and eyes.
You might shed a tear or two. When you yawn you actually use lot of muscles in your face. Yawning often increases the secretion of tears because of muscular tension on the lacrimal glands which may simultaneously dam up the drainage system. When we yawn the facial muscles surrounding our eyes pull tight.

No it cant be prevented unless you make your yawn smaller. This is collapsing your ribcage against your diaphragm causing shallow breath and slight oxygen depravation. When you yawn your face scrunches up for the extra intake of air when you yawn it actually means you need more oxygen.
