The candles are put in the windows as a sign of welcome. It is common to display a candle in the window as a simple and elegant decoration to celebrate the holiday season. The tradition of placing candles in windows at christmastime has become widespread possibly because of the availability of battery operated candles that pose less of a fire hazard than do wax. In early america homes were often miles apart. On christmas eve an irish family who wished to have a priest come stay in their home and offer them the sacraments would covertly signal this request with a candle lit in the window. Because of irish laws against the catholic faith a candle in the window signified a home where fellow members and priests were welcome according to the catholic education resource center. They are also used as a symbol of faith waiting for the return of a solider and a prayer waiting to be answered.
