You can get white tongue from many different causes but it usually goes away in a few weeks. Alcohol consumption and tobacco usage are known to cause a number of health problems a white tongue included. White tongue is the result of an overgrowth and swelling of the fingerlike projections papillae on the surface of your tongue. White tongue can build up over time or it might show up suddenly if you irritate your tongue or get an infection. The most common cause of white tongue is dehydration or dry mouth which is a breeding ground for bacteria. White tongue is often related to oral hygiene. Since they are more raised the papillae can trap tiny particles of food dead cells from within your mouth or bacteria between them creating a paler hue.
In general this problem isn t the result of an illness. Small bumps on the tongue called papillae can start to swell up and become inflamed in a mouth that is not cared for well. On a basic level your tongue looks white because the papillae fleshy raised portions of tissue lining your tongue have become swollen for some reason. You can also use an anti fungal mouthwash.

The appearance of a white coating is caused by debris bacteria and dead cells getting lodged between the enlarged and sometimes inflamed papillae. Your tongue can turn white when the tiny bumps papillae that line it swell up and become inflamed. Conditions such as poor oral hygiene mouth breathing and dry mouth are common. White tongue sometimes happens along with a related symptom called hairy tongue.
The most common cause of a white tongue is poor oral hygiene. If you have a white coating on the entire tongue it s likely due to inflamed papillae caused by a buildup of bacteria debris fungus and dead cells.
