Fasting refers to a specific practice of eating during the course of a day one regular meal and two smaller meals wherein the two smaller meals don t add up to one regular meal.
Catholics abstain from flesh meat on ash wednesday good friday and the fridays of lent. In fact we typically do not eat meat every friday during lent leading up to good friday and easter. Biblically it is not said to fast meat or anything on good friday many just fast to recognize their sorrow in the death of jesus. Christians have abstained from eating meat on good friday for centuries and many people whether or not they are religious still will only eat fish on the day.
This is because meat was traditionally seen as a delicacy and something to be enjoyed on special. In fact many christians especially. One can abstain without fasting but on ash wednesday and good friday one does both.
