Why Don T We Have An Eclipse Every Month
Olivia Luz
Total solar eclipses happen when the moon crosses between the sun and earth but earth doesn t experience a total solar eclipse every month.
If the earth and moon orbited on the same plane around the sun we d have a total solar eclipse and a total lunar eclipse every month. Why we don t get eclipses more often. We don t get an eclipse every month because the moon s orbit is inclined at about 5 to the ecliptic. If the sun earth and moon were truly lined up perfect this would be the case.
Knowing this and knowing that the moon orbits the earth in a little under a month it seems like we should have eclipses far more often. Why don t we have an eclipse every month. Because the moon s orbit wobbles up and down with respect to the earth the satellite s shadow can be too high or too low to cause a solar eclipse. A lunar eclipse when the moon s light is blocked happens when the earth gets between the moon and the sun casting a shadow on the moon.
If the sun earth and moon were truly lined up perfect this would be the case. But we don t get them every month in fact it can take months and months between eclipses of any kind. A solar eclipse occurs when the moon s shadow falls on the earth. They do not happen every month because the earth s orbit around the sun is not in the same plane as the moon s orbit around the earth.
