The trail of tears was a series of forced relocations of approximately 46 000 native americans between 1830 and 1850 by the united states government.

A 2 000 mile 3 218 69 km trail called the trail of tears national historic trail was dedicated in 1987. The term trail of tears invokes the collective suffering those people experienced although it is most commonly used in reference to the removal experiences of the southeast indians generally and the cherokee nation specifically. The brief description offered accompanying a link to the full story is this. It was called the trail of tears because they forced native americans to walk for hours on end for months at a time to move them.

The phrase was coined in 1998 by florence naziel during a vigil held in terrace british columbia who was thinking of all families crying over their loved ones four murdered and two missing women. They were forced to leave their homes. There are a disproportionately high number of indigenous women on the list of victims. The march was called the trail of tears due to the number of deaths along the way.

It is called a trail of tears because of the great privation and many deaths suffered along the way. Even if someone died they native americans carried their dead with pride and honor. The trail of tears asthe march was called started just outside of chattanooga tn andended in florence al where the indians were loaded aboard boats forthe trip farther west. The trail is called trail of tears because during the move of the cherokee tribe many people died along the way and many people were in tears.
