Why Is It So Quiet When It Snows
Olivia Luz
As i write this article heavy snow continues to fall outside onto the already 6 inch thick layer atop my car.
There s a reason everything seems so tranquil after it snows and it s because of acoustics. While this is true there s actually a science behind the quiet environment when it snows. However according to science daily snow really does have an effect on the way sound travels. When a fresh batch of snow falls to the ground the world tends to quiet down.
So why is this. When light fluffy snow accumulates on the. But when it comes to a fresh blanket of snow there s largely silence. Snow stacks up with plenty of space between flakes which means that.
According to science daily snow acts as nature s very own soundproofing system. It s likely winter people aren t out as much and traffic comes. That could partially be attributed to human factors. As opposed to rain which can be very noisy there s plenty of space between snowflakes meaning that there is also less space for sound waves to bounce around.

In the winter months everything is quieter because people aren t out and about as much as they are in other months. And it s not just because. As it turns out there s a scientific reason behind the calming silence with the characteristics of snow playing a big role in how sound can travel. There s generally less traffic fewer noises fewer birds chirping and even fewer people hiking in the smoky mountains.
