Why Is The Heart Called A Double Pump
Camila Farah
See full answer below.
The human heart is sometimes called a double pump because it drives blood along two separate pathways in the circulatory system. Deoxygenated blood from the body drains to the right side. The heart is a single organ but it functions as a double pump sending oxygen depleted blood to the lungs to pick up oxygen and unload carbon dioxide while simultaneously sending oxygen loaded blood coming from the lungs to cells throughout the body. With each beat the heart drives arterial blood through the body and it draws venous blood back toward itself.
