The statue of liberty was designed and constructed by the joint efforts of france and america between 1870 and 1886.
In the past men where a sign of strength and war but women where a sign of peace and love. The statue is almost synonymous with the city of new york. In the 20th century americans began replacing our old emblem columbia the national personification as a woman derived from minerva with liberty nee libertas. But why did sculptor frédéric auguste bartholdi choose to make liberty a woman.
The statue is a figure of libertas a robed roman liberty goddess. The roman republic built a temple to libertas the goddess of liberty on aventine hill and her. Why is the statue of liberty a woman. In actual fact though lady liberty was designed and sculpted in france and given to the united states as a gift.

Well considering that bartholdi used his mothers face for the model of the face of the statue of liberty and supposedly his wife s body as the model for the rest of the fight. Seems like bartholdi knew he was creating a female form.
It is often seen as a symbol of freedom and justice core principles in the united states declaration of independence from the british empire in 1776.
