Can You Train A Dog To Use A Litter Box And Go Outside
Olivia Luz
Even advocates of house training where the dog learns to use the bathroom outside don t mind litter box training as a secondary alternative.
Just teach him the proper behavior and reward him when he succeeds. Then place your dog in the box and use a command like go potty and praise it. If your dog begins to go outside the litter box quickly pick him up and put him in the box then use your command phrase. Dogs and cats approach litter box usage quite differently unlike dogs cats doesn t need training to use the litter box.
Litter box training allows for liquid and solid waste. Accidents will inevitably happen during the training process. For the small breeds a doggy litter box might just become your best friend. Yes you read that right.
Unfortunately your dog and cat won t be happy using the same box. This option gives your pup an opportunity to relieve themselves of the liquid and solid waste when it is time to go. And thankfully teaching a pup to use their box is about the same amount of work as teaching them to go outside. Another option is to use turf or sod pads which you can also place into a litter box to help prevent spillover or misses.

Dogs don t feel the need to bury theirs. Determine the ideal spot using the principles of cat litter box placement. Do not rub your dog s nose in the accident or punish him. This will give your dog the idea that this is the place to go.
Consider the gender of your dog and whether he lifts his leg to urinate as you pick the litter box you plan to use for your dog. Even a dog who is reliably trained will be in the box and lift his leg or squat and go outside the box. To litter train a dog start by setting up a large plastic tub filled with dog litter in a private spot that s not near your dog s food or water. Or use one of the commercially available products meant to entice dogs to eliminate in a specific area.
This can be a cardboard box lined with plastic or newspaper or it could be a taller plastic box. You can train a dog to use a litter box but most people find the floor pads more convenient than a litter box of the appropriate size for their dog.
