Can You Wash Your Hair With Dreads
Camila Farah
By washing your dreads with a residue free shampoo no conditioner whatsoever every 3 4 days your scalp will stay healthily oil free and clean as a whistle.
Everyone s dreads need to be deep cleaned at least once if not twice a year. Note though that it s an unsustainable practice to try washing locks everyday. Dreadlocks can smell if they ve gone a long time without being washed. Keep it tight right.
My dreads may be even technically cleaner than many people with normal hair because most people use conditioner after shampooing to put the oils back into their hair once the shampoo has officially cleaned it and stripped it of its oils. Keeping your dreadlocks residue free is the best way to keep them as tight as possible. Wash your hair with shampoo that is residue free. Although some claim that dreadlocks thrive on neglect they need to be washed at least once a week.
However most people with dreadlocks care enough about their hair to wash it as often as is practical. Save money with an easy homemade solution that will give you dreadlocks that will last a long time. Dreadlocks require moisture to sustain their strength and firmness. Squeeze as much water out of your dreads as possible and then wrap them in a microfiber towel.

Without moisture they will become susceptible to frizz split ends breakage and other forms of damage. And if you want to keep your dreads in perfect condition it is not advisable to wash them very often at first simply do it once every 4 or 5 days. Once a week is the minimum but once every 2 3 days is ideal. Your locs may take 8 or more hours to dry completely so it s important to wash them in the morning to give them enough time to dry all the way through by the evening.
Washing your dreads prevents oil buildup on your scalp or loose dirty dreads. Dreads can shed a lot so you want to avoid that and avoid it having any direct contact with your pillow which will cause friction. Don t wash dreadlocks every day. Do not go to bed with wet locs or you risk dread rot.
Whether you see it or not your locs accumulate dirt and things from the environment as well as sweat product residue and god knows what else. Some even do it just once a week it all depends on your hair type and the time of year for example in summer. Wash your dreads once a week to keep them healthy and moisturized. You will also see that with the passage of time not many hairs will come out of your dreadlocks so you can wash them more regularly say every 2 or 3 days not advisable daily.
