Why Do Dogs Lick Their Lips When You Pet Them
Olivia Luz
American veterinarian states that senior dogs who develop behaviors like excessive licking may do so because of musculoskeletal problems although they usually lick their own joints or feet if this is the case.
Dogs lick their lips in response to a threat to signal to the other that they are not a threat rather than act aggressively in return. Dogs who lick people or other animals compulsively may suffer from stress anxiety or obsessive compulsive disorder. An example of this can be seen in dogs who are scolded when their owners return home to find the dog has had an accident in the house. A dog might not connect the scolding to relieving himself indoors.
Dogs lick their lips to appease and soothe a person or animal they see as a threat in order to ward off aggression. It is often a stressed and fearful dog who is exhibiting. The dog receiving the face licks shows his dominance by standing tall to accept the gesture but does not lick the other dog in return.
