Why Do We Drive On Parkways And Park On Driveways
Olivia Luz
Parkways were the perfect places to drive a carriage down for a scenic jaunt out.
Driveway came into written use a bit earlier than parkway did. So there s the connection between parks and parkway but why do we drive on them. It was only as driveways became shorter and shorter due to the rise of suburbia and cars and home ownership became accessible to the masses who didn t necessarily own large plots of land and trappings like buildings to store cars that car sized driveways began to be commonly used as a place to park ones car. Metropolitan reformers who feared the health costs of industrial growth started establishing wooded parks within cities nationwide hoping their trees would make urban air more breathable.
So to recap we have driveways because we used to drive on them. Thus the history proves that we have a reason to drive on parkways and park on driveways. Unlike parkway the word driveway didn t refer to. Even when the cars became prevalent the driveways weren t used to park a car because ample parking space was available in the barn etc.
That s the explanation at least and if you think about it it s still pretty weird.
