An allergic reaction may cause several dots all over the nail. Anemia can cause vertical ridges to appear and may also make dents appear in the nail. People with advanced cirrhosis often have white fingernails for example. Another cause is liver or kidney disease.
Other possible include koilonychias leukonychia fingernail pitting and ridges. The lines have been linked to low levels of a protein called albumin. White fingernails may be a sign of poor circulation. The lines are not caused by injury to the cuticle or nail area.
