Henry took thedecision to leave the catholic church because he needed a male heir.

King henry split from the roman catholic church and thereby from the pope simply because it stood in his way. The english reformation took place in 16th century england when the church of england broke away from the authority of the pope and the roman catholic church these events were in part associated with the wider european protestant reformation a religious and political movement that affected the practice of christianity in western and central europe. Church doctrine would not permit divorce from his first wife catherine of aragon. King henry viii wanted out from his first marriage.

This meant that the pope no longer held religious authority in england and henry was free to divorce catherine. Nor would the pope grant a divorce. Henry viii broke away from the catholic church so that he could divorce his first wife catherine of aragon and marry his lover anne boleyn. The elizabeth i site points out that henry was arguably a catholic at heart and changed the beliefs of the church very little after creating his own church henry moved to dissolve the existing catholic monasteries and convents which often had large landholdings as well as deep financial pockets of their own.

The act made him and all of his heirs supreme head of the church of england. He alsowanted to gain power and money henry actually needed to break away from the catholic church because hecould not produce a male heir with catherine of aragon. Though early signs of anticlericalism had surfaced in england by the 1520s catholicism still enjoyed widespread popular support. Several of their babieshad died and henry s only legitimate child was a girl called mary.
