King henry split from the roman catholic church and thereby from the pope simply because it stood in his way. The english reformation took place in 16th century england when the church of england broke away from the authority of the pope and the roman catholic church these events were in part associated with the wider european protestant reformation a religious and political movement that affected the practice of christianity in western and central europe. Church doctrine would not permit divorce from his first wife catherine of aragon. King henry viii wanted out from his first marriage.
This meant that the pope no longer held religious authority in england and henry was free to divorce catherine. Nor would the pope grant a divorce. Henry viii broke away from the catholic church so that he could divorce his first wife catherine of aragon and marry his lover anne boleyn.
