Why Do Ostriches Put Their Head In The Ground

The most common myth concerning ostriches is that these birds bury their heads under the sand whenever danger is on the prowl.
Although they are not the brightest bulbs in the socket. They do pick up small stones for their gizzards however they do not put their heads in the ground. Instead they will readily defend themselves and protect their chicks. This type of behavior is common in animals.
The legend could also be attributed to the fact that a nesting ostrich who senses danger may flop down with his head and neck flat against the ground in hopes that potential predators won t spot him.
