Also during festivals like holi diwali dusshera and raksha bandhan indian men wear a red dot on their forehead. This mark called a bindi is often worn by married indian women and symbolizes wisdom. In hindu weddings the groom puts red stuff called sindoor in the bride s hair parting at the top of her forehead to symbolise her married status hindu brides wear red but this is not a bindi.
Why do many hindus wear a dot near the middle of their forehead. The dot worn on the forehead is a religious symbol. The bindi red dot on the forehead is a symbol of marriage because in ancient times when ksatriyas warriors each wanted the same princess they would have to wrestle each other for her. A red dot on the forehead is an auspicious sign of marriage and guarantees the social status and sanctity of the institution of marriage.
In regards to married women a simple red dot on the forehead symbolizes marriage love and prosperity while a black one signifies the death of the partner. Bindis have very specific cultural and spiritual meanings in south asian culture and are worn throughout various countries such as india pakistan bangladesh etc. Again this tradition is purely related to hindu religious beliefs. It represents divine sight and shows that one is a hindu.

According to hindu belief the spot on the forehead between the eyebrows is an important nerve point called a chakra. For women it is also a beauty mark. Indian women wear black or red dots on their foreheads because this part of the body has symbolic importance to hindus. Bindu is considered the point at which creation begins and may become unity.
