This topic is still an unresolved issue among nursing bodies around the world.
Many hospitals and nursing schools will say you need to cover it up. Most nursing schools have pretty strict dress code policies for clinical often including no visible tattoos and limits on multiple earrings and other piercings. But some dont care too. Where a tattoo is considered inappropriate or likely to cause upset to patients carers visitors or other staff the individual will be requested to cover the tattoo.
Even the national student nurses association and the american nurses association have no official rule or recommendation for body arts in nursing. Can nurses have tattoos. I m halfway through my education to be an rn. A short stroll through online nursing forums will show stories of nurses with visible full sleeves tattoos covering a whole arm or just a few visible tattoos treating patients.
Large tattoos or a large number of tattoos can be a problem when it comes to nursing. If you think tattoos are horrible and ugly and unprofessional but are not in an administrative position keep your judgments to yourself. Currently there is no known official policy about nurses with tattoos or piercings. I have an excellent gpa and am on the deans list. The design of your tattoo really does not matter if your hospital does not allow nurses or staff to have visible tattoos. But in other facilities visible tattoos are never seen on the nurses.
I like my tattoos and don t regret them. The acceptance of tattoos on a hospital nursing staff varies by facility. I used to work for a tattoo artist thats what i wanted to be then and i have a full sleeve. Where a staff member has a tattoo in an area that remains exposed when wearing their uniform this must not be offensive.
This varies from school to school though you ll have to abide by the specific dress code at your school. And some dont want ink to be visible.
