Can You Leave Dahlias In The Ground Over Winter Uk
Olivia Luz
One dahlia bishop of landaff i haven t managed to keep over winter but bishop s children grown from seed were ok.
You could wrap it in horticultural fleece and yes do cut off the foliage before storing them for winter. This winter i lost 100 out of my 130. Yes you can leave them in the pot i have done this myself successfully but make sure the pot is in a dry dark frost free place. This surprised the glasgow gardeners who usually have to dig up and store their tubers as they rot in the wet clay soil.
Normally i do not loose more then 5 or 6. They don t like freezing conditions and should be lifted and stored over winter properly to avoid rotting. This will act as a blanket against hard frosts. Overwintering dahlias in single beds if like me you grow dahlias for cutting in big beds you can leave them in the ground over winter.
Whether to leave dahlias in the ground depends on where you live and what the soil temperature is in winter. So can you leave dahlias in the ground over winter. I can not remember exactly what the weather was except that it was quite cold for a couple of weeks from mid december. Mulching dahlias in the mild winter of 16 17 tubers mulched and left in the bed overwintered well in both glasgow and yorkshire although the plants weren t the tallest in our test by mid summer.

For 20 years i have left my dahlias in the ground over winter. If you live in a milder part of the uk then you might want to leave your dahlias in the ground overwinter. For warmer winter conditions you can prune them right back and cover with mulch. If you happen to live in a mild area of the county where the ground never freezes two deeply during the winter you can theoretically leave your dahlias in the ground over winter and as long as you add a few inches of mulch such as compost or leaf mould over the bed and the soil is free draining.
Leave the dahlias in the ground until the first hard frost kills the leaves and stems and causes the tubers to begin to go dormant for the winter.
