It began after the start of ww2 with petrol and later included other goods such as butter sugar and bacon. With the onset of world war ii numerous challenges confronted the american people. It was not until the early 1950s that most commodities came off the ration. The government found it necessary to ration food gas and even clothing during that time.

During world war ii all sorts of essential and non essential foods were rationed as well as clothing furniture and petrol. To make the british weak the germans tried to cut off supplies of food and other goods. This was a time when food and other supplies had to be rationed because of the war which meant that those at home were making do with what was available to them. Rationing was introduced to manage shortages and control civilian consumption.

In the second world war the civilian population had to cope with extensive rationing of food and clothing as well as severe shortages of other consumer goods as economic resources were diverted towards the war effort. During this period of austerity housewives acquired an increased status because the successful implementation of rationing and other domestic economy measures was vital in maintaining civilian health and morale. Bread which was never rationed during wartime was put on the ration in july 1946. Eventually most foods were covered by the rationing system with the exception of fruit and vegetables.
